This beautifully light and airy house is set within exquisite landscaped gardens in a quiet situation, surrounded by nature, yet enjoying the convenience, facilities and security of a gated community. The property is centrally-heated. At the entrance to the community there is a staffed gatehouse and barrier.

The house is surrounded by a fence and ornamental hedging and features three electronic access gates: one to the main house, one to the staff house and service area and one to the boathouse and lower garden.

One hour from the bustle of Madrid and its international airport, it provides a perfect serene antidote to life in the fast lane, whether as a weekend retreat, a holiday home or a permanent residence.

Relax on the large terraces, open and covered, from where there are stunning views of the lake, or work out in the gym, take a dip in the pool, or simply lay back in the Jacuzzi or sauna. Play outsize chess or paddle tennis, take a morning walk/run round the estate or jump on a quad for a ride along the many trails around the lake. Pack a picnic and find your own idyllic spot for lunch on the lake, in one of the secluded bays, or on land, where you can explore protected bird sanctuaries and unspoilt nature reserves. Venture further afield and explore the Roman remains, the Alto Tajo Natural Park. Or visit various castles and monasteries and the many attractive villages and restaurants where you can enjoy specialities such as the local good quality wines, cordero lechal (milk-fed lamb) or cabrito asado (young roast goat).

In and Around Sacedon, Guadalajara

Guadalajara and the region

Guadalajara is located in central Spain, in the northeast of the Castile-La Mancha region. The best way to discover the area’s rural landscapes is to visit its famous Black Architecture villages. There are also several protected natural spaces in the province, such as the beech forest in the Tejeda Negra Nature Reserve. And for those in search of culture, the historic/artistic sites in places such as Atienza, Brihuega, Hita, Molina de Aragón, Palazuelos, Pastrana and Sigüenza are well worth a visit.

Another interesting fact is that the Guadalajara area is the main character in the book “Journey to La Alcarria” by the Nobel Prize for Literature Camilo José Cela. Meat plays a very important role in the local gastronomy, and visitors should make a point of trying the roast lamb or kid.

“Ercavica” is a wonderful example of an important and famous Spanish-Roman city, built on high ground with wonderful views over the surrounding countryside.  It stretched out over 20 hectares and was surrounded by a wall.  The oldest remains date from 1 century BC, although its period of greatest splendour was between the 1st and 2nd century AD.  Mural paintings and its advanced architecture and sophisticated urban structure have been discovered in the excavations of the forum, basilica, temples and its own mint. Other constructions show the thermal baths, the water cisterns and the Domus Aterrazada, a large Roman house.

Contact John and Trish Stokes

Dear Home Seekers,

As the owners of El Vergel we have enjoyed many happy years in this idyllic retreat with our large family.

The main attraction for us has been that with so much space, and so much to do, that there is plenty of room and time for everybody. Whilst the teenagers were partying by the pool, we could be cooling off several levels above, perhaps taking in a film in the home cinema, or exploring the extensive, irrigated gardens.

With the ‘kids’ grown up we have less family time together in Spain, so reluctantly we are selling the house and hope that the new owners will love El Vergel as much as we do.

With best wishes,
John and Trish Stokes
